Inside of us we each have varying degrees of the great elements - Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. These allow us to have unique characteristics and qualities. When I think about the Earth's qualities, words like heavy, stable, firm, supportive, calm, unchanging and grounding come to mind. These are words which I would not use to describe myself, and yet they are the ones that are the most relaxing to me. They allow me to balance out my go, go, go nature and settle somewhere in the middle which helps me feel secure and grounded.
According to the ancient wisdom of India, the Earth is the most solid and stable of all the elements. The Earth beneath our feet allows us to stand firm and unwavering in times of high stress and fear. Without the Earth around us and the calming effect of nature, we would all be running around doing a multitude of tasks without ever stopping to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us... even in our own back yards.
We are connected so deeply with the Earth element that without it our bodies and minds would have no solid bone structure, muscles would not tone, our tissues would be saggy and the mind would not have concrete thoughts. This element allows us to be in the physical form we are in today.
The senses are another way we connect with our environment. The nose is the sense organ and the anus is the organ of action of the Earth. Now we can all have a good chuckle here, so go ahead and giggle. I did as I was writing this! But really, let's think about this... the anus (there I said it again) is part of the energy of Muladhara (the root) - the 1st chakra (the spinning energy centers of the body). The first chakra is generally depicted as the color red and allows us to have a sense of well-being, is connected with your family or tribe, develops as we become more sure in what we believe and value. This energy increases the more we have a sense of who we are and what direction we are going in life. The 1st Chakra is associated with the words that the Earth and nature offer us everyday: support, nurturing, stability, and a firm sense of who we are. So give thanks for "parts" of your body that "root" you to Mother Earth.
Along with the organ of action, the sense organ of smell or the nose is also supportive in our connection to the Earth. As Greg and I have travelled around the world, where the air seems more pure than in larger cities, the smell of the earth is so pronounced. It's like the energy of the dirt, trees, flowers and the grass gets inside of us to create that calming, relaxing feeling. I know this is not by accident that we can use our nose to take in the energy of the earth. I feel that there is a greater appreciation of nature and its properties when we can lift our heads high and take a big old primal sniff at all the awesomeness around us!
I hope that as you walk with earth that you will begin to see, feel and smell how deeply the earth is embedded in all of us in varying degrees. I feel that as we begin to understand the depth of this connection, we will also feel a desire to protect such a wonderful place that supports us in all we do. In return, we will also be consciously aware that when we reach out and touch the ground, we are also affecting the Earth within ourselves.
Namaste,
Becs
